Windows vs. Doors – Best Choices for Window Treatments

It’s a question we hear a lot from clients visiting our design showroom in Irvine – “Should we treat doors and windows the same or different in our overall interior design plan?”

The answer is a simple “yes”, but the true solution is different for every client. Often, people are looking for a single window treatment that will fit all different types of doors and windows – a magic window covering that will suit all different sizes and styles of openings.

For example if a family room has three windows, one slider and the kitchen next to it has a French door with an adjacent window, clients often want to pick one window covering that would fit them all.

As experienced interior designers specializing in window treatments, we see this often the fatal flaw in window treatment décor. Each opening must have the proper window covering to achieve maximum functionality and style, but this often requires different, yet complementary, applications. When it comes to windows and doors especially, we can not and should not treat them the same. While the differences between doors and windows may seem obvious, let’s take a look at the points between them that truly make them different with regard to how they must be treated:

  • Doors are often floor to ceiling, and used more frequently. Windows can be floor to ceiling, but mostly they are about 30-40" above the floor.

  • Windows often slide open and do not take room when opening and closing, but doors can open inward or outward.

  • Most windows have a casing, so window treatments can be installed inside mount, however most doors, are usually flushed with the wall. Most coverings should be mounted at least 5” above and 5” on each side beyond the opening.

It is perfectly okay to have inside mount window treatments for the windows and outside mount treatments for the door. Depending on your room and other elements of your décor, you can build commonality between the two with a valance or top treatment that has the same type of fabric, style and color. Custom treatments such as a cornice box, wood fascia or fabric swags work perfectly.

Based on our experience, here are some of our recommendations for product compatibility between window coverings for doors and windows. There are many more types of window coverings out there than mentioned of course, each suited to a specific need and budget.

The list below is based on the more popular window treatments that we provide. Please contact us if you have any questions about your specific situation and /or want to know more about any particular window fashion product.
